The
Threat
Big land sales often seem like
something that happens in remote or distant parts of Maine, but one-third
of the land in the Mt. Blue/Tumbledown region has recently been put on the
market. Most people assume that Tumbledown Mountain with its popular
hiking trails are part of Mt. Blue State Park, but in truth, they are
privately owned. Not only that, some of the park's trails cross
private land, some of which is currently for
sale
Fragmentation of these lands will have a
profound effect on the region. As large tracts are sold, liquidation
harvesting, second home development, and subdivisions inevitably
follow. This is already happening. If we do not act now, land
will be taken out of the timber base and traditional access will not be
guaranteed.
