To the Editor (of The Franklin Journal, August 17, 2001):

To the Citizens of the Surrounding Communities: I implore you to heed the warning, and not just support but become proactive in the Tumbledown Conservation Alliance. Our environment, local economy, way of life, the future of the Western Mountains of Maine and their wildlife are seriously threatened with one-third of the land in the Mt.Blue/Tumbledown region currently on the open market.

This means inevitable second housing development, which brings a future of increased tax rates with new community demands from these outside dollars. If you question this rationale, take a look at the effects on Maine’s coast, talk to anyone from the fishing community. Why are they squeezed out of living where they work? Why must they sell properties that have been in families for generations?

I fully support change, development and growth when it is done responsibly and in agreement with the majority of the surrounding communities. If the Alliance is successful in raising the funds to purchase and protect these lands, I am sure some development will follow, but in a way respectful and responsible to the surrounding communities, the environment, and the beauty of the Western Mountains.

Our local economy can be stimulated far more by capitalizing on the spirit of the undeveloped pristine land, by encouraging and providing for visitors to walk our trails, cool in our streams, and enjoy the natural bounty of this majestic place.
So I ask you to think further than just your immediate backyard. This is your land, your heritage and the future of your children. Think responsibly, give generously, support and speak out for the Mt. Blue/Tumbledown Project and the Tumbledown Conservation Alliance.

And if it’s been a while, come spend an afternoon in Weld, chat with members of the community, experience the peace, serenity and magic for yourself; or visit the web site at www.tumbledown.org.
